Here is a cool little list of places you can go to get some inspiration for applying to licks and grooves of your own:
-Maybe sit near a construction site and listen in on what they are doing. Chances are, you can take a little bit of that away with you and put some nice drumming with it
-Listen a lot to any type of marching percussion you can. It tends to be very rudimental, that's true...but a lot of the time, you can find some AWESOME grooves in the playing.
-I don't care who you are and whether you like it or not, you can find some of the most delicious and phattest grooves in music the likes of rap and hip-hop. True, a lot of people don't really have a taste for it, but listen to it anyway. The electronic drumming (or in some cases actual live drumming) has the possibility to spark a nice jolt in your mind that will just open doors for you and others in new ways you never thought you could think.
-If possible, travel to places near you (or far if you have the funding for it) that contain cultures you know have music you aren't used to hearing. If it's Top 40 music you are used to listening to, go visit a local drum circle, or better yet, some form of a Middle Eastern ensemble with things like the sitar and tabla...and vice versa.
-Maybe take a little dabble in drum-programming yourself. It's possible to be able to set up things to play against that get the mind thinking of grooves and licks you couldn't have touched before-hand.
-Take some time off from life and go sit in a park...or just outside. The world just has natural rhythms going on all the time and all around you. If you can't pick up something here, try harder. There is ALWAYS something to be learned and gotten from the world's happenings.
-Pick up new percussion instruments you've never heard of. All the new sounds outside of a typical drum set you can achieve with all the crazy instruments percussionists and drummers alike have come up with have just given us MOUNDS of toys to play with to create all new sounds and just mind-blowingly tasty grooves.
These were just a few (long) ideas on places you can look to and listen to to catch new ideas from as well as open doors to achieve all new areas of thinking towards your drumming as a whole.
Enjoy, fellow drummers and percussionists. Keep on rockin'!
